IHS Nigeria and UNICEF Nigeria Expand Access to Oxygen for Clinically Vulnerable People

IHS Nigeria has signed an 18-month partnership with UNICEF Nigeria to strengthen oxygen supply in secondary hospitals across nine states. This partnership supports the Nigerian Government’s national strategy to increase medical oxygen in health facilities. Under this new collaboration, oxygen plants with the capacity to produce 300/600 liters of oxygen per minute, will be installed in nine health facilities and incorporated into state-specific oxygen resilience plans, including the training of healthcare workers on safe oxygen administration.

The ceremony was attended UNICEF’s representatives including Peter Hawkins, the UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative; Rushnan Murtaza, and UNICEF Nigeria Deputy Country Representative; Celine Lafoucriere. IHS Nigeria was represented by CEO, Mohamad Darwish, members of the leadership management team, Legal, Sustainability and Corporate Communications Departments.

IHS Nigeria Promotes Corporate Volunteering Practices with Departmental/Regional Initiatives

Human Resources met with beneficiaries from the Irede Foundation. Three children have been adopted under this five-year partnership which provides educational, mentoring, and career counseling support for children with prosthetic limbs.

Finance partnered with the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service and the Rotary Club of Lagos Island to deliver a two-day Blood Donation Drive with 308 donors. 236 pints of blood were collected with the potential to save 708 lives.

Abuja Regional Office continue to support the Beulah Sickle Cell Foundation. This year, the Abuja office provided funding for medicines and wheelchairs to help 25 patients.

IT Department launched a five-year initiative delivering university preparatory classes for senior secondary school students, providing scholarships to the top five students for university, and internship opportunities for school leavers. The 2022 pilot has helped 45 students.

Technical Division completed the renovation of the lower primary school building at the Abule Ayo Nursery and Primary School, in Bariga, Lagos. Over 500 educational materials were also donated, impacting 156 pupils.

IHS Nigeria Joins UN to Commemorate the 2022 World Youths Skills Day

In collaboration with WeforGood International, IHS Nigeria commemorated World Youths Skills Day (WYSD). Themed “Promoting Eco-Focus Solutions: Africa’s Pathway to Sustainable Growth” their event brought together young people and private sector organizations to discuss how to scale solutions to environmental challenges using technology.

Participating organizations included the United Nations Information Centre, IHS Nigeria, Mastercard Foundation, Lagos State Empowerment Trust Fund, Sandra Iheanacho Foundation, and The Illuminator’s Academy. The event was also attended by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment & Water Resources, Food & Beverage Recycling Alliance, and International Climate Change Development Initiative.

Change Innovation Challenge at Aspire Coronation Trust (ACT) Foundation’s Breakfast Dialogue

At the ACT Foundation’s annual conference, themed “Shifting Paradigms: Transforming our Approach to Addressing Africa’s Challenges”, IHS Nigeria provided grants to the three winning companies (Nafarmfoods, Dynalimb Technologies and the Health Emergency Initiative) of the Change Innovation Challenge. The grants were awarded in recognition of these companies’ sustainable solutions.

Nafarmfoods converts fruit and vegetables into a paste to tackle issues of scarcity, extreme costs, and wastage during harvest seasons, and uses a Digital Cluster Map to implement.

Dynalimb Technologies provides affordable, functional prosthetics and orthotic services to physically disabled people across Nigeria and uses Additive Manufacturing (3D Technology) to manufacture medical devices. ​

Health Emergency Initiative (HEI) provides financial assistance to patients in public hospitals.

The conference was attended by CEOs, Directors, and senior executives, including John Dodge, Director Roll-out, Deployment, Jumoke Akande, Associate Director, Business Solutions, GICL and Babatunde Aribido, Manager, Corporate Communications, IHS Nigeria.

IHS Nigeria's Mission-T App Impacts 815 STEM and ICT Teachers

IHS Nigeria continues to improve access to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education through their Mission-T initiative. In July, they delivered two workshops for ICT/STEM junior and secondary school teachers exploring modern teaching tools and STEM education material. In total, 815 teachers and 3,502 students from 305 schools were reached. In Oyo State, Barrister. Abdu Ramah Abiodun – Honorable Commissioner of Education, Science, and Technology, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. B.T. Odekunle, and nine directors from the state’s Ministry of Education attended to endorse the Mission-T App.

Generator Recycling Program Impacts 26 Communities

In Q3, IHS Nigeria donated 26 generators across nine states to help bridge the power gap and reduce reliance on the national grid for schools, community centers and health services. Collectively, these donations have positively impacted 113,750 people by providing a regular power supply to organizations supporting more vulnerable groups of the general population.

TTSWG Facilitates Capacity Development and Wellbeing Sessions

The Telecommunications and Technology Sustainability Working Group (TTSWG), an industry group initiated by IHS Nigeria, hosted a series of thought leadership workshops for key sector players. This included a Sustainability workshop, held on August 10, themed “Introduction to Sustainability for Tech-Driven Enterprises”. It focused on the core concept and practice of Sustainability, challenges both within our sector and in Nigeria, and defined the benefits of sustainability reporting. In total, over 260 people took the training.

This was followed by a webinar on “Wellbeing as a Hallmark of Sustainability in Tech”. It focused on revitalizing global partnerships and how our industry can promote sustainability through international best practices, innovation and thought leadership. Over 190 joined the webinar with a further 495 people registered.

IHS Nigeria Speaks at the UN Global Compact Network Nigeria Open House

The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) recognizes IHS Towers’ commitment to its Ten Principles. Based on this, the UNGC invited IHS Nigeria to share an impact story at its open house event on September 28 under the theme “Accelerating your Sustainability Journey”. It was an excellent opportunity for participating companies to share insights on their engagement with the UN Global Compact and how it has accelerated their sustainability journey. It served as a call to action for companies to join the UNGC and help shift the world onto a more sustainable and resilient path. IHS Nigeria was represented by Asmau Aims Smaila, Senior Manager, Sustainability as she presented IHS’ engagement with the UNGC’s gender equality target.

IHS Nigeria Wins Telecom Infrastructure Company of the Year

In July, IHS Nigeria enjoyed a double celebration as it was awarded the Telecom Infrastructure Company of the Year Award, and its Chief Commercial Officer, Olufemi Arosanyin, emerged as one of Nigeria’s top 25 technology and telecommunications personalities. The Tech Innovation Awards (TIA) celebrates private sector organizations, individuals and governments at the forefront of digitization in Nigeria.

Tree Planting Project with Osun State Ministry of Environment

IHS Nigeria have completed their tree planting partnership with the Osun State Ministry of Environment. Supporting the government’s ambition to establish a tectona grandis plantation, a type of tropical hardwood, it  involved the planation of 4,000 gmelina arborea trees across five acres. This will help improve air quality by absorbing odours and pollutants, prevent flooding and soil erosion.
